The telecoms watchdog has sent letters to two mobile phone operators, state-owned Teletalk and private Airtel, asking them to pay up their outstanding dues in 10 days.

The chief of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) told bdnews24.com on Thursday evening that representatives of the two companies had received the letters from the BTRC office.


Zia Ahmed, the BTRC chairman, said: "Airtel will have to pay a total of Tk 190 million, including late fees since 2010, and Teletalk Tk 399 million, also including late fees."

The BTRC chief said Airtel deposited 15 percent less in annual licence renewal fee and in revenue sharing and spectrum charge since 2010.

A letter has also been sent to Teletalk to pay their core dues, he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, BRTC also sent letters to private mobile-phone operators Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi and Citycell asking them to pay Tk 8.57 billion in arrears, late fees and renewal charges for 2G licences.

"Their licences will not be renewed unless they deposit the money," BRTC chief said.
