State-run mobile-phone operator Teletalk is set to introduce SIM with 3G facilities at the end of this month after a test run of 3G services which began on Jul 29. Teletalk Managing Director Mujibur Rahman told bdnews24.com: "Teletalk is ready to inaugurate the 3G service between Sept 27 and Sept 30." A letter informing the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications about the service's launch was sent, he said. Telecom Secretary and Teletalk Chairman Sunil Kanti Bose also confirmed that the service would be launched by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. "If she gives consent, the launching ceremony will take place during those days." Teletalk plans to provide 3G services to over 300,000 subscribers in the capital after the launch. According to telecom regulator Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), until July Teletalk had nearly 2.4 million subscribers. Being the state-run operator, Teletalk was given the opportunity to launch 3G experimentally before other operators. It was supposed to launch the service in March for six months but deferred the launch for 'technical reasons.' The 3G mobile telecommunications are standards for mobile phones and mobile telecommunication services fulfilling the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specifications by the International Telecommunication Union. Once introduced in Bangladesh, it will make mobile telephony much more efficient, with high-speed data transfer facilitating users to watch mobile TV, make video calls, use GPS navigation and access many other services.
